End user FAQ

Which versions of Microsoft Project is Project Mentor compatible with?

The latest version of Project Mentor (2.12, January 2008) is compatible with Microsoft Office Project 2007, Microsoft Project 2003, 2002 and 2000.  Project Mentor 2.0 is compatible with Microsoft Project 2003, 2002 and 2000.  Registered users can upgrade from version 2.0 and 2.01 of Project Mentor to 2.12 by following this link to our download centre.

Can I install Project Mentor into the Microsoft Project 2007/2003/2002 interface?

Yes. Project Mentor is designed to work in either a standard web browser (Internet Explorer 5.5 or above) or through the Project 2007/2003/2002 interface (which itself contains web browser elements). Instructions on how to install Project Mentor into the Project 2007/2003/2002 interface can be found by following this link to our download centre.

Do I need a sound card to use Project Mentor version 2?

Ideally, yes.  With a sound card (and speakers or headphones), you can see and hear the 80 walkthroughs that enhance Project Mentor's lessons.  If you don't have sound, you can watch the walkthrough's vision-only.  The script for each walkthrough is displayed in a scrolling inline frame beside the camcorder icon.

Can I use Project Mentor to help me pass Microsoft Project certification exams?

Yes you can.  The current version of Project Mentor has content that meets (and in many cases exceeds) the curriculum for the Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist 70-632 exam for Microsoft Office Project 2007.  Project 2003 users would also be able to take this exam.  For Project 2002 and 2000 users, the Microsoft Office Specialist certification is also supported by Project Mentor.  To see how Project Mentor maps to these certification curricula and to access certification revision guides, just click on the Tools menu, then click on the 'B' button on the title bar to access the body of knowledge tools.  Use the drop down list to choose the relevant revision guide.

Licensing FAQ

I use Microsoft Project on a PC in the office and also on a laptop.  Can I use Project Mentor on both the PC and the laptop?

Yes you can.  The End User License Agreement allows you to install Project Mentor on different computers that you use as long as: (i) No one else shares your Project Mentor license; (ii) You do not use Project Mentor on multiple computers simultaneously.

Can I upgrade from Project Mentor 1.02 to Project Mentor 2.0?

Yes.  If you purchased Project Mentor with upgrade assurance, this process should be automatic.  Please contact your systems administrator for advice, or use click on the the Upgrade tab above for further information.

Can I install Project Mentor on to a machine alongside Project Companion?

Yes.  Project Companion and Project Mentor can co-exist on the same machine.  However, Project Companion is a subset of Project Mentor so we recommend removing Project Companion from your machine and installing Project Mentor on its own.

Technical FAQ

Will Project Mentor work within the security restrictions imposed by Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista?

Yes.  If you are using Project Mentor version 2.01 or later, it will work seamlessly within service pack 2 / Vista.  If you are version of Project Mentor prior to 2.01 you will get script warnings.  These warnings are given by XP SP2 / Vista if Internet Explorer detects any scripts within a locally hosted web page.  As Project Mentor requires these scripts for its normal working, these must be allowed.  If you are using Project Mentor 1.x in a non SP2 / Vista environment or within the Microsoft Project 2007/2003/2002 interface, you will not receive any script warnings.  Please see the Downloads tab for installation considerations for Project Mentor 2.01.  To upgrade from Project Mentor 1.x, please see the Upgrade tab.

Why does the back button on my browser not always work as expected?

In Project Mentor version 2 we enhanced the user interface so that when you jump from a lesson or reference page to a terminology definition, Project Mentor can return you to your original page position and not the top of page (as with version 1).  To jump back to the correct place within a lesson or reference, simply use the 'L' or 'R' buttons within the title bar instead of the back button.

Can I log into my Personal Learning Plan if I have an AOL account?

Yes. You must login to your AOL account before you try to access your Personal Learning Plan. You will also need to log out of AOL after you have completed your Personal Learning Plan.

My company uses a firewall, can I still use a Personal Learning Plan?

If you can access the internet using your machine then you should have no problems getting access to your Personal Learning Plan, even if your company uses a firewall. To test internet access on your machine select Start, Run, and then type 'http://www.microsoft.com'. This should open the Microsoft web site if you machine has internet access. If you do not have internet access then you should contact your systems administrator for advice.

I've installed Project Mentor into the Microsoft Project 2007/2003/2002 interface but I cannot log into the Personal Learning Plan?

The Project 2007/2003/2002 interface will require that you make the Personal Learning Plan web site into a trusted site. To do this open your web browser and from the menu select Tools, followed by Internet Options, and select the Security tab. In the 'Select content zone', select the green trusted sites icon and click the sites button. Clear the 'require site verification' option and enter the following into the 'Add this site to the zone' field, 'http://www.jgaconsult.co.uk', then select the Add button. You will now be able to access your Personal Learning Plan within the Project 2007/2003/2002 interface.  For detailed integration instructions, just follow this link to our download centre.
