Volume 5, No.3

Dear Andy,

Welcome to the third Project Learning newsletter of 2007.  If you've had a chance to visit our website recently, you'll see that it has just had a major facelift, with lots of additional content and improved navigation.  We've already received many positive comments from enquirers and customers alike, who find our website not just a useful source of relevant information, but also a pleasure to use.  You may also have noticed that we now have two websites:

www.projectlearning.net - for project managers all across the world.
www.projectlearning.co.nz - for project managers primarily based in Australia and New Zealand.

By having two distinct web presences, we're aiming to provide both localised and worldwide project-related solutions that are optimised by location.  To find out why we now have an Australasian presence, just read on below.

Also in this newsletter you'll find that Tips and tricks have returned after a short break.  We also have a new version of Project Companion for download, this having been updated to support Microsoft Project 2007.  Finally, there is a link to download a WBS modelling tool that is now available from Microsoft.

I hope that you find this newsletter to be a useful project-related resource.  If you have any suggestions for future newsletter content, please do get in touch with me.

Sincerely,

Andy Jessop

Project Learning in New Zealand

As some of you may have spotted from our previous newsletter, we now have a different postal address.  No longer are we based in the United Kingdom, we've moved 12,000 miles to a completely different hemisphere!

As of April 2007, Project Learning's headquarters is now based in New Zealand.  Our offices are in Lower Hutt, which is just outside the capital city Wellington.  Our complete range of products and services are now available for both the New Zealand and Australian markets - so if you are looking for project management or Microsoft Project training, EPM training and consultancy, or you simply want advice on how to manage your projects better, just give us a call on +64 4 562 7661.

If you are a Project Mentor customer (or you are contemplating becoming one), rest assured that we are committed to ongoing product development and support.  In fact, we've just released our Project Companion system for Microsoft Project 2007 to coincide with the publication of this newsletter.  Please see below for more details.

If you're not based in Australasia, don't worry.  We're still going to provide the same level of worldwide support that we did from the UK, with 24/7 call messaging from our national-rate USA and UK phone numbers and email replies as quickly as international time zones will allow.  Over the forthcoming months, we're also looking to announce a number of strategic alliances with partner companies around the globe to provide project-related solutions wherever in the world you may be.

Tips and Tricks

Planning a project is one thing; managing a project effectively is often something completely different, and with its own set of challenges.  Of the Microsoft Project users that track actual progress against project tasks, disappointingly few understand how to compare a planned schedule with what actually happened.  These users are probably unaware of the wealth of information available to them, and the value they can get from correctly interpreting that information.

If you click on the link below, these tips and tricks illustrate a number of ways that schedule comparisons can be made, together with how the information available can be interpreted and understood.

These tips and tricks were first published in newsletter 8, volume 3; back in 2005.  Between then and now, we've had several thousand new newsletter subscribers - so we thought it wise to republish these particular tips and tricks; especially as they now contain content relative to Microsoft Project 2007.

Project Companion for Microsoft Project 2007

In our last newsletter we announced that our Project Mentor distance learning system now supports Microsoft Office Project 2007.  We're delighted to announce that we've just upgraded our Project Companion system to support Microsoft Office Project 2007 as well.  If you are already a Project Companion user and you want to upgrade, or you'd like to know more about the latest version, just follow this link:

WBS Modeler for Microsoft Project 2007

If you use Microsoft Visio 2007, you'll probably already be aware that you can produce Visual Reports from Microsoft Project 2007 (if you are a Project Mentor v 2.1 user, just use reference 4.3 to find out how).  You may not be aware that you can also interactively manipulate your project's work breakdown structure (aka outline) and create or change projects within Visio by using a Visio add-in entitled WBS Modeler.  The WBS Modeler is a partner-provided tool that can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site.  Just go to the following page on our website:

http://www.projectlearning.net/microsoft_project_knowledge_base_biz.htm

And you'll find a link to download the WBS Modeler from Microsoft.  The WBS Modeler comes complete with documentation and it also looks to be quite simple to use.
